Dr Mitra Vasisht was born in the State of Tamil Nadu, India on 28th May, 1950. Dr. Mitra Vasisht is a career diplomat of the 1975 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). She holds a Masters’ Degrees in Economics, and Law.
She also holds a Master’s degree International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), USA and a doctorate in International Relations from USA.
In her distinguished diplomatic career she has served in the Indian Missions in Vienna, Thimpu and New York in addition to important assignments in New Delhi in the Americas, UN, Northern and South East Asia divisions.
She has also served twice on deputation – once to the Regional Passport Office, Madras, and more recently, to the United Nations Development Programme (in its Thailand office) and the United Nations Population Fund in New York.
Her areas of special professional interest have included bilateral relations with India’s neighbours, multilateral negotiations in the UN and relations with countries of South America and the Caribbean.
Since June 2005, she is serving as the Ambassador of the Republic India to Cuba, Dominican Republic and Haiti. Her hobbies include languages, classical Indian and Western music, painting, reading and sports. She has language competency in Hindi, Tamil, English, French, Spanish, German and Russian.
Dr. Vasisht is married to Mr. Anil Vasisht who is with the UN Mission in Kosovo. Their son, daughter and daughter-in-law are all in Finance and live and work in New York, USA.
